Janitzio- Day of the Dead Island.
The Island of Janitzio is famous for the fact that the first Altars were put on it; the Purepechs believed that Patzcuaro’s lake was inhabited by ghosts, returning from a place called Cumiehchúcuaro (kingdoms of the dead) to stay with living people for two days, this tradition was called Animecha Kejtsïtakua (offering to souls).
To reach the island, you need to take a ferry or a private boat, which takes about 25 minutes.
From a distance, you can see the statue of José María Morelos - the hero of the Mexican independence campaign – standing at 40 meters in height and located at the highest and most central point of the island.
The night of November 1 is still the best time to visit. The cemetery, located at the very top of the mountain, on the roofs of the islanders' houses, is beautifully decorated with flowers, burning candles, and food. Constantly being watched by the locals, the atmosphere is almost magical.
Unfortunately, because the island is not large, it is very crowded during this period, and therefore difficult to get out of the boat and return to it. We went up the hill through crowded streets full of shops, restaurants and food stalls, to enter the cemetery where we stood in a long queue, I had the unpleasant impression that we even walked on graves.
It was a very interesting experience, but I would not repeat it, I would prefer to choose another day to avoid such crowds.

Już z daleka widać Statuę José Maríi Morelos - bohatera meksykańskiej kampanii niepodległościowej -która ma 40 metrów wysokości i znajduje się w najwyższym i najbardziej centralnym punkcie wyspy.
Noc z 1 listopada to wciąż najlepszy czas na wizytę. Znajdujący się na samym szczycie góry cmentarz, umieszczony często na dachach zamieszkanych przez wyspiarzy domów jest pięknie udekorowany. Przy ozdobionych kwiatami, palącymi się świecami i jedzeniem grobach zmarłych czuwają miejscowi. Panująca atmosfera jest wręcz magiczna.
Niestety wyspa jest nie duża i w tym okresie bardzo zatłoczona, ciężko wyjść z łodzi jak i na nią wrócić. Pod górę wchodziliśmy zatłoczonymi uliczkami pełnymi sklepów, restauracji oraz stoisk z jedzeniem, aby wejść na cmentarz staliśmy w długiej kolejce, miałam nieprzyjemne wrażenie, iż często wręcz chodziliśmy się po grobach.
Było to bardzo ciekawe przeżycie, ale nie powtórzyłabym go, wolałabym wybrać inny dzień, aby uniknąć takich tłumów.
